116th Independent Field Battery – Royal Canadian Artillery with the City of Kenora
Freedom of the City Parade
KENORA, ON – Department of National Defence/Canadian Armed Forces
116th Independent Field Battery – Royal Canadian Artillery will be exercising its Freedom of the City on Saturday, June 3, 2017 with a military parade.
At 2:30 p.m. on Saturday June 3, 2017, Acting Commanding Officer of 38 Canadian Brigade Group’s Artillery Tactical Group (38 ATG) Major Paul Haughey will lead approximately 60 artillery soldiers to Kenora City Hall where Brigadier-General James Selbie, Colonel Commandant of the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery and His Worship David Canfield or designate, Mayor of the City of Kenora, will inspect the soldiers as well as address the parade and guests.
Granting of the Freedom of the City to military units is a long standing tradition in which a municipality can recognize a military unit and allow them to march through the city with “drums beating, colours flying, and bayonets fixed.” This is a most prized honour, for it recognizes over time, the honourable record of the military unit, and demonstrates the respect and admiration the community has for them. 116th Independent Field Battery was granted the Freedom of the City in 1985 by then Town of Kenora Mayor Kelvin Winkler.
A Freedom of the City Ball will be held in the evening starting at 6 pm at the Clarion Lakeside Inn, Kenora.
Who – 38 Artillery Tactical Group (38 ATG) soldiers from 116th Independent Field Battery, Kenora, Ontario, 10th Field Regiment, Yorkton, Saskatchewan and 26 Field Regiment, Brandon, Manitoba led by 38 ATG Acting Commanding Officer Major Paul Haughey
When – 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2017 from Ontario Provincial Police office on Water Street and proceed down Main Street to City Hall.
