Inclusion, diversity, disability and accessibility; everyone matters

Currently, 1 in 7 people living in Ontario have a disability. By 2036, this number will rise to 1 in 5 as the population ages. The City of Kenora recognizes that building an accessible community is not only important to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to lead a balanced, healthy lifestyle but also for driving the local economy.

With advice and support of the Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC), all City departments strive to facilitate and deliver barrier-free services. We work hard to ensure we meet or exceed the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities standards (AODA) established by the Ontario government. Accessibility standards are the rules that businesses and organizations in Ontario will have to follow to identify, remove and prevent barriers to accessibility.

Ontario has developed standards in many important areas of life:

  • Built environment (buildings and other structures)
  • Customer service
  • Employment
  • Information and communications
  • Public transportation

In accordance with these AODA standards, service delivery is guided by the City’s Accessibility Policy, Accessibility Standards for Customer Service and Multi-Year Accessibility Plan.  As living documents, these policies will continually be updated to reflect new legislative requirements and community needs.
