Household Hazardous Waste


The City of Kenora promotes the diversion of hazardous materials from the landfill by hosting regular Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection days, where residents have the opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous materials.

Once again, beginning June 1, 2017 until the end of September, every Thursday from 9 am until 2 pm, residential customers can dispose of household hazardous waste at a Depot inside the Transfer Station.  Call the Transfer Station for more information at 807-467-2980.

This is a FREE once-a-week service for our residential customers!!

The Household Hazardous Waste depot is now closed for the season.
We collected over 40 tons of hazardous waste in 2016!!

Only residential Household Hazardous Wastes are accepted.  HHW are defined as wastes that are:

  • reactive
  • flammable
  • corrosive
  • poisonous
  • and otherwise potentially dangerous materials such as fuel, antifreeze, hobby chemicals, cleansers, solvents, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, butane, aerosol cans, batteries, mercury thermometers, pharmaceuticals, makeup, sharps, fertilizers, oil filters, waste oil and their containers, paints & coatings and their containers, pesticides, batteries, fluorescent tube lights, fire extinguishers, devices containing mercury, syringes, etc.

All items must be carefully packed and clearly labelled.

Sharps must be placed in a plastic container with a lid, i.e. peanut butter container.

No home business, industrial or commercial hazardous wastes will be accepted. Commercial customers are required to make their own disposal arrangements.

The Depot will not accept any radioactive waste and will not accept PCB waste.

Orange Drop is an industry-funded recycling program aimed at keeping hazardous and special waste materials out of Ontario’s landfills and waterways.
